Facebook is under pressue to follow Twitter’s ban

Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg are being ratcheted under pressure to follow suit with Twitter’s ban on political advertising. Democratic Presidential candidates request that Facebook should do it soon.

And on Wednesday following Twitter’s announcement, Zuckerberg doubled down on that stand, reiterating that Facebook is loath to interfere with it and claim the important of political speech.

During the 2016 in the U.S presidential campaign, Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms have come under fire over Russia’s use of such media sites to sow political division and spread misinformation. In recent weeks a long with the 2020 White House race, that debate has heated up again.

Twitter suggested that social media is so powerful which misleading or false messages pose a risk to democracy and it chose a ban on all political advertising to respond with.

The timing of the announcement seemed designed to goad Zuckerberg, It happened the same day with Facebook’s quarterly earnings report.

President of consultancy Creative Strategies Tim Bajarin said that the pressure on Facebook was going to be extremely strong to do something similar, and the criticism of Facebook would only increase if they don’t.

Facebook and Twitter already take steps verifying the identities of political advertisers prompted by the furor over Moscow’s interference to prevent political manipulation. But the verifying systems, that rely on both automated systems and humans, have not been perfect.

Facebook mistakenly took down Bush’s baked beans ads because the food company was not registered as a political advertiser with Facebook and they contained the word “Bush”. When they promoted news stories about important issues or candidates, some media organizations have also seen their ads which flagged for review.

And then there’s the question raised about individual posts from opinion makers or other politicians, which can carry be shared widely cointaing political messages even though they are not paid ads.

On Friday Facebook confirmed that publisher of The Wall Street Journal and other stories from News Corp will be delivered at a new “tab” which planned at the leading social network.

Facebook has confirmed that it will deliver News Corp stories in a departure from letting algorithms dictate users’ experiences through its longstanding practice and separate from the trademark news feed which will be edited by seasoned journalists.

Mark Zuckerberg Facebook co-founder and chief executive said in a statement provided to AFP  that people want to read high quality news on Facebook. They want to bring reliable news to their users.

He is excited we’ll have the opportunity to include US News Corp properties such as award-winning journalism from The Wall Street Journal in our news tab. No details about the agreement were provided.

Mari Melguizo Facebook spokeswoman said in a statement given recently to AFP that they started by paying a subset of publishers who can provide a steady volume of original and fact-based content including a range of topic areas. The number of publishers involved in the news tab will grow over time

Last month Facebook said that a portion of the publishers whose stories appear in a news tab set is planned to pay only to launch in the weeks ahead. According to the California-based online social network, the tab will be separate from the trademark news feed at Facebook which displays content from people’s friends and updates.

Facebook has confirmed plans in a departure from its longstanding practice of letting algorithms dictate users’ experiences for a News Tab will be edited by seasoned journalists. A human team will select top relevant, reliable breaking news stories.

Privacy is the primary goal of Facebook in the future (Part 2)

  1. Reduce time of the message

Snapchat is a pioneer in using self-destruct messages, and soon Facebook took advantage of this idea. The company can further develop this idea in the future, the content not only automatically disappears after a certain period of time, but users can also delete them more easily if desired.

  1. Safety

The Internet is not a really safe place, especially for children or sensitive people. So after all, adding encryption and reducing the lifetime of the data, though, they are specific and obvious steps that Facebook can take, but this makes Facebook safe.

The company can start by reducing negative interactions online (such as stoning, etc.) by adding tools to help users prevent people from targeting them. Reducing the lifetime of the content also helps in part.

There are clear benefits for both users and Facebook when this ecosystem becomes secure. Finally, if users feel that Facebook is safe, they will return and continue to use it more often.

  1. Link products

Earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg described a world where you can text a person on Messenger and the recipient can receive messages through Instagram. This shows that Facebook wants to link all their products. The fact that messaging applications can work together plays a big role in this process.

Suppose you have a Facebook account, post photos on Instagram, message your friends on WhatsApp. If these applications link, you will not have to switch to reply to someone’s specific message on a given application. However, this plan is still quite vague.

  1. Database security

The encrypted data can still be hacked, but the goal is to ensure that the physical data is as secure as possible. With Facebook, this means being careful about where to store data. For example, Facebook cannot store data in countries where human rights policies have not developed enough or there is no freedom of speech.

This is really hard, not to mention that countries always have policy changes, so it will affect Facebook’s data center.

Privacy is the primary goal of Facebook in the future (Part 1)

Mark Zuckerberg made a statement during the Facebook F8 Conference 2019 emphasized that  privacy is the future. But in the past, when it came to privacy, Facebook really didn’t do well. So the company needs to go through a very long way to regain the trust of users.

Promoting privacy requires a great effort on Facebook and it seems impossible to do it one night. Not only that, Facebook emphasized that privacy is not only in the browser but also in Messenger, Instagram, Oculus and WhatsApp.

In other words, Facebook not only makes the browser more private, but also makes the message more private. In a speech at F8 2019, Mark presented six core details of this plan.

  1. Private interaction

Sometimes, you just want to keep interacting with friends and family and don’t want to share everything publicly. With the new Facebook, users can control sharing more private with one or more people. Private interactions are part of coding.

  1. Encryption

When it comes to texting, End-to-end encryption is very popular. This encoding has also appeared in WhatsApp application. However WhatsApp is not the only messaging service of Facebook, so if Facebook wants users to be able to text via any application to anyone, then adding End-to-end encryption to Messenger and Instagram Direct is very important.

Encrypting activities in other Facebook products is equally important. Information like the websites you visit, your location when using Facebook, … all should be encrypted.

Basically, encryption will ensure that no one can see the activities you want to keep private (including Facebook), except you. Currently, Facebook can see all the user activity performed in the company’s services, but once it has been coded, this will change.

Encryption is the only way to ensure that users do not need to worry about messages or other data on their phones being monitored by Facebook or a third party.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg calls for strong internet regulation

Among fears over election advertisement and far-right increase, facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg says that governments could take a bigger role in putting more regulations on areas such as user privacy and election integrity.

The Facebook founder and chief executive emphasized that governments and regulators have to take “a more active role” as well as put stricter regulations on the internet and the social network. Zuckerberg said he believed stronger regulation should be implemented in four areas namely user privacy, election integrity, harmful content and data portability.

Mr. Zuckerberg believed that unless governments and regulators update the rules for the internet, we couldn’t make use of it and ensure the freedom of expression and business as well as protect society from expanding harms

Zuckerberg told that legislation was crucial to protect elections and it need to be updated. He also said that Facebook had already brought particular changes about political ads and it ensure the user’s benefits and freedoms.

Facebook has released that any advertisers in the EU will go through tighter checks due to the organization of European Union elections in May 2019. They need provide documents which confirm their identity and submit their location.

The company announced that all political advertisements with the sponsors on both Facebook and Instagram in the European Union must be obviously labelled.

The social network warned that it will block any advertisments without legal registration on mid-April.

Facebook will continually collaborate with experts  in reviewing its policies in terms of harmful content, but Zuckerberg stated they will make argueing decisions and mistakes. Also, Facebook was creating an independent atmosphere  to give people permissions to challenge its decisions.

Facebook boss added that the effective privacy and data protection required a “globally harmonised framework”, and together with the EU’s general data protection regulation (GDPR) they advocate more countries adopting rules.
